Thirst-Quenching Drinks, Welcoming Faces, Lively Entertainment & Enjoyable Conversation

For over thirty years, Moby Dick has been a friendly meeting place for those in search of a thirst-quenching drink, welcoming faces, lively entertainment, and enjoyable conversation.

Anchored by a 250 gallon salt-water tank above the bar and a fun and friendly staff behind it, Moby Dick is the Castro District’s most enduring neighborhood bar.

People gravitate to Moby Dick because of its warm, inviting atmosphere and feel welcome due to friendly locals and the promise of a good time waiting inside. Interesting music videos adorn the four video screens around the bar, and pool, pinball, and video quiz enthusiasts all have a home for spirited competition.

In 1979, a bar at the corner of 18th and Hartford formerly known as The Corner Store officially became The Moby Dick Bar. In those thirty-plus years, the bar adapted to the many changes in the times and in the community, but one thing has remainted consistent. Moby Dick remains the consummate neighborhood bar, with friendly faces, affordable drinks, and enjoyable entertainment.

In 2002, Joe Cappelletti and Doug Murphy purchased Moby Dick and carefully molded the bar into its current incarnation. One of the characteristics of the bar that they are most proud of is that they’ve managed to maintain a steady group of familiar faces who have been coming to the bar for years, and in addition have managed to appeal to brand new customers who feel immediately welcome.

Moby Dick maintains a wide variety of drink options, with twelve beers on tap and several more available in bottles. A varied selection of spirits is sure to satisfy any special cocktail needs you may have. And while there are drink specials on a daily basis, (click here), one special is always on any time the bar is open – two-for-one frozen drinks, typically margaritas Monday through Saturday, with Sunday featuring frozen Sex on the Beach.
