About

QUEER PARENT PIONEERS

Three lesbian parenting pioneers share the struggles and triumphs they faced while raising intentional LGBTQ families, and how their adult children are now thriving.

TOPICS INCLUDE:
- What does it mean to be a pioneering queer family?
- What were the legal stumbling blocks at the time?
- How growing up in a queer family can be a superpower!
- How these trailblazers created a roadmap for today's queer families.
- What if the world understood that queer families offer a unique perspective and positive influence?

Followed by a Q & A, plus a trivia game with great prizes!

Featured Panelists:
Donna Hitchens (along with her wife Nancy) adopted two baby girls in the 1980s. They were the first couple to win the legal adoption as same-sex co-parents in 1986. As the co-founder of The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), Donna wrote and published the litigation manual for attorneys to defend lesbian mothers in child custody cases. Donna was the first out elected lesbian judge elected in the US (1990).

Crystal Jang, the first out lesbian in San Francisco’s Chinatown (1978). An educator and community bridge builder, Crystal co-founded Asian Pacific Islander Queer Women and Transgender Community (APIQWTC). Crystal and her wife Sydney adopted a baby girl from China in 1996. Crystal’s parents greeted them in Hong Kong, starting the first generation of openly gay APILGBT families.
Moderator:

Robin Lowey is a speaker, author, filmmaker, and historian, whose work elevates the discourse about the role lesbian history plays in advancing LGBTQ civil rights and social equity. A pioneering queer parent and activist, Robin is the founder of Lesbian Game Changers, a project that shares the stories of LGBTQ+ role models who empower today’s youth to realize their full potential and value in their careers, communities, and families. Lesbian Game Changers provides valuable resource books and films that fill the gap in education about LGBTQ history. Robin and her ex-wife each gave birth to baby boys in 1990 and 1996, respectively.
